The editors of Pig Health Today are acutely aware of the hardships facing the pork industry as it responds to plant closures, labor shortages and other challenges resulting from the pandemic.

At the same time, we recognize that maintaining herd health and biosecurity are vital to the industry’s long-term security and sustainability. We therefore will continue to report on the latest news and information to help the pork industry meet this goal. As always, we welcome your comments and editorial suggestions.

The last word: Our focus is pig health

Welcome to Pig Health Today, a new magazine we’re sponsoring to keep US producers, veterinarians, nutritionists and other decision makers on top of the latest developments in disease management and pig care. In between issues, you can also log into pighealthtoday.com and sign up for our free e-newsletter and other valuable resources.

Does the US pork industry really need another magazine and news website? We thought so. Our friends in the trade media do a fantastic job of covering the industry, reporting on everything from trade issues and consumer trends to politics, the environment and, of course, production topics.

Our goal is not to compete with those media but to supplement them with editorial focused exclusively on a subject we know best: pig health. We also want to present the latest scientific information in a manner that everyone in the pork chain can understand.

Drawing on expertise

Naturally, we’ll draw on our in-house expertise to share our ideas on disease management, responsible antibiotic usage and individual pig care and biosecurity. At the same time, we’ll be offering perspectives from independent veterinarians, academics and nutritionists.

For example, in our Disease Trends article, the University of Minnesota’s Montserrat Torremorell, DVM, PhD, asks if we need to take a harder look at grower pigs and their role in transmitting the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus to sow farms.

Then there’s the issue of regulatory compliance. In “What’s in season?” Iowa State University’s Chris Rademacher, DVM, reports on how swine veterinarians are managing bacterial diseases in the new veterinary feed directive era. Pig Health Today is also focused on the health and longevity of your business. In our Special Report, our editors take an in-depth look at retail and consumer trends and how they could affect pork consumption and production.

Here’s to working together to raise the bar for pig health — today, and every day.
